Network

Currently my home network consists of a 2.2Mb down, 256 up Cable modem attached to a Netgear FVS318 Prosafe VPN router.  The router is connected to a Dell PowerConnect 2024 24 port 10/100 switch.

External IP:                      Dynamic (Cable modem now)

Internal IP Subnet:            192.168.0.X

Internal Subnet Mask:       255.255.255.0

    The router forwards all incoming HTTP, FTP, DNS, and POP3 requests to my Server.  Port 6346 which is used for Gnutella file sharing is forwarded to my System. Requests on all other ports are dropped.  I used to let the router serve up DHCP addresses, but after I turned on Dynamic DNS I had to use the server for DHCP again.   All internal machines point to the server for DNS resolution.  The DNS server points to my ISP's name servers, and 208.179.42.162, 204.107.129.2, and 12.28.140.20.   The last 3 servers let me see unrecognized top level domains like .www and .ais.   My DNS server caches all look ups which probably speeds up my access times a whopping 30-300 ms.   

    The server is also connected to 2 printers.  An old Lexmark 4039 via 10Mb, and a Optra SC1275 via 100 Mb Ethernet.    If anyone is interested in a color laser printer,  they can be had on Ebay for as little as $215 shipped.   

       I make most of my own network cables.  They are pretty easy to make, and you can save a lot of money doing it.  I buy Belden 1700a series cable for $.07 a foot at the local electronics surplus.  That is about 50-90% off what you can find it most other places.  Here are a couple of handy wiring diagrams.

Regular Ethernet cable.  Looking at the connector with the tab facing away from yourself, and the cable hanging down.  Same order on both ends.

OW, O, GW, B, BW, G, BrW, Br

Ethernet Crossover cable.  Same connector orientation.   Make one end like described above.  Use the following order for the other end.  This is useful for connecting 2 computers together without a Hub, or Switch.  It can also be used to connect to Hubs or Switches together, when neither device has an Uplink port.
